Reviving artisan mortar

In the 20th century, the constituents of mortar were adapted in line with new building materials and industrial methods. As a result, knowledge of historic materials and techniques was lost. New research at the University of Gothenburg show that historic binders and mortars can be produced and used in contemporary restoration projects.
“We need to recapture knowledge in order to maintain and preserve historic buildings built using material that are no longer used,” explains the Department of Conservation’s Jonny Eriksson, author of the new thesis.
